Abstract
Today, engineers from EE, CS, ME, and MS are now working together to solve big problems for telematics. You may have heard about self-driving cars and zero-emission electric cars. GOOGLE, Tesla, Cruise, Zoox are major players in this field.
The major challenge facing us in this decade for transport is not about a super engine but rather on fuel. There are over 1 Billion cars in the world. This constant consumption of fuel will not scale and cannot last forever. The other challenge we are facing is accidents. The recent Tesla accident has caused a big hoo-haa. Yet in this century, we now witness how wireless, location, sensing, analytics, databases, cloud, big data, and neural networks play a vital role in vehicular telematics.
In this talk, I will introduce a new system architecture that captures a driver's behavior and style, along with providing his travel record. This system was implemented in data servers (back end) and Android apps (front end) that utilize on board diagnostics (OBD) technology, GPS, wireless, analytics and neural networks to generate insights and reveal the implications of driving styles and road types on safety, carbon emissions, and vehicle fuel consumption. The overall solution is simple to deploy, yet clever and in real time. It does not only benefits drivers but also insurance companies and transportation agencies, in the push for better and safer drivers on the streets and for a smarter car that catches on with the technological wave.
