Abstract:

Plant natural products have played a vital role in search for novel bioactive compounds because of their diversified chemical structures and abundant stereochemistry. Many of them or their derivatives have been developed as clinically used drugs. Paclitaxel, artemisinin, maytansine, harringtonine and camptothecin, just to name a few, are among the well-known active natural products discovered from plants. We have teamed with multidisciplinary expertise of botanists, chemists and biologists to explore the rich plant sources in Southern Asia, especially in Lingnan region of China. Lingnan is a region that covers three provinces of Guangdong, Guangxi and Hainan and the southern areas of Hunan and Jiangxi Provinces. Hong Kong is also located in this region, and three quarters of the metropolis is countryside. It alone hosts more than 3,300 vascular plants, and approximately 2,100 of them are native to Hong Kong. Our collaborative efforts have resulted in the collection of a cumulative total of more than 5,000 plant samples. These samples have been evaluated for their potential effects against cancer, HIV, bird-flu virus, Ebola/Marburg viruses, tuberculosis, malaria, dental bacteria and athlete’s foot fungi. Potent anticancer, anti-fungal and antiviral compounds have been identified through bioassay-guided separation of dozens of the plant leads. Some compounds also demonstrated potent in vivo antitumor and antifungal activities, and their mechanism of actions have been explored.
