Can you imagine the possibility of solving N unknowns with M linear equations where M is much less than N? It turns out that this is possible in recovering sparse signal under compressive sensing, a hot topic in signal processing and information theory. By tailoring decoding to a given application, we can now achieve surprisingly high compression ratios without comprehending the input signal. But the subject can be hard to understand and applications may be difficult to imagine. In this talk I will discuss intuition behind compressive sensing in hoping to make the material easy to follow. In addition, I will describe a number of applications under investigation at Harvard, including collaborative decoding, compressive spectrum sensing, IC Trojan detection and continuous fine-grain cloud monitoring.
