ABSTRACT

Fast and interactive rendering of complex 3D scenes from a networked virtual environment on mobile devices remains a difficult challenge, due to limited graphical capability of such devices.  To overcome this limitation, existing approaches use a server-assisted rendering technique, where a server renders the scene on behalf of the client, and stream the rendered scene as a video to the client for display.  Such approach is not scalable and introduces interaction delay.

In this talk, I will describe an alternative solution that uses other peers in the same virtual environment to assist the mobile client.  We observe that certain elements in the scene rendered by other peers nearby can be reused at the mobile client.  These elements are rendered and sent to the mobile client as images.  The mobile client warps the images and compose them into the rendered scene for display.  This talk presents our preliminary research results and outline the remaining research challenges.
