Abstract: The revolutionary advances of the capture and display technology are catapulting us into a completely new era of Ultra High Definition (UHD). In anticipating that the HD- and Ultra-HD-enabled devices will be soon getting popular and affordable for consumer and professional use, the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) and the ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) formed a Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding (JCT-VC) in Jan. 2010 and issued a joint Call-for-Proposals (CfP) to solicit technologies that could potentially provide higher compression efficiency than the existing H.264/AVC standard in coding HD and Ultra-HD videos. This call generated tremendous research efforts in both academia and industry, receiving 27 proposals from institutes/organizations worldwide, which was historical high in MPEG/VCEG CfP competitions. Subjectively, the top-performers achieve similar visual quality to the H.264/AVC anchors with only half of the bit-rate. With strong industrial support, this new generation of video coding technology (currently known as High Efficiency Video Coding, HEVC) is now close to completion and is expected to be approved as International Standard in 2013. In this talk, I will briefly overview its present and future developments.
